Organic spectrometry (KJE500)

After an introduction to spectrometric analytical techniques, the student will learn to combine the structural information from NMR/UV/IR/MS-spectra to confirm or reveal the structure of small to medium sized organic molecules.

Content

A discussion of the principles for common spectrometry-techniques like MS, IR, NMR (H, C,DEPT, HSQC,COSY, ROSY, HMBC) and UV; will be followed by a systematic examination of the techniques and the structural information they give for organic molecules. An important part of this subject is to be able to utilize acquired spectrometry-knowledge to obtain structural information from spectra and combine this information to deduce an unambiguous structure of organic molecules. The department's spectrometry-equipment will be applied for some practical work on unknown samples.

The goal of the course is to develop practical skills in resolving the structure of molecules from a set of spectrometric analyses. These skills are measured in a final exam where the kandidates have to resolve spectra, and interpret details of spectrometric data and to some extent do predictions.

Learning outcome

A candidate with a completed course will know spectrometry techniques like UV, IR, NMR and MS, and know what structural information can be obtained from different spectra, incuding DEPT and 2D-techniques like COSY, ROSY, HSQC and HMBC. The candidate should be able to combine this information and deduce the structure of organic molecules from their spectra, and control that the structure comply with all data. The candidate will be able to suggest supplementary experiments to obtain required information to obtain an unambiguous structure of an unknown molecule. The candidate will be able to obtain spectra from the department's spectrometry-equipment (UV/IR/NMR/MS).

Required prerequisite knowledge

KJE200 Organic Chemistry 1
This course assume that the student have knowledge abou the construction of molecules and the chemical bonds between atoms. This knowledge is aquired in any basic organic chemistry course. At UiS this knowledge is given in KJE 200 Organic Chemistry.

Recommended prerequisites

MLJ540 Instrumental Analysis

Exam

Form of assessment Weight Duration Marks Aid
Written exam 1/1 4 Hours Letter grades Approved, basic calculator, One A4 sheet of handwritten notes, Textbook containing notes.,

The textbook contains a lot of tables and charts and should be used during the examn. As this is a skills test, not a memory test, it is also allowed with one A4 sheet of notes, and annotations and short notes in the text book.

Coursework requirements

Mandatory laboratory work
Mandatory laboratory work (3-5 days) must be completed and approved by course teacher in order to get access to the final exam.

Method of work

Lectures, self-tuition, colloquiums, exercises, teamwork, laboratory work.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course coordinator, the student representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
