Understanding petroleum reservoirs rocks, their properties and the pressure, volume and temperature (PVT) conditions that affect their fluids is part of the basic knowledge that both geoscientists and engineers need to confront on a daily basis in the petroleum industry.

Knowledge on the different elements and processes that lead to the formation of petroleum systems and hydrocarbon reservoirs in the Earth's subsurface.
Basic knowledge on the different concepts and methods that geoscientists use to understand the 3D geometry and properties of petroleum reservoirs.
Basic knowledge of type of Hydrocarbon reservoir fluids, and the behavior of the fluids in the reservoir and through production and process systems.
Recognize different depositional and tectonic settings of sedimentary rocks and how they may impact hydrocarbon reservoirs.
Calculation of in place reserves based on geophysical, petrophysical, and production/test data.
Understand representative sampling of reservoir fluids for compositional and PVT analysis.
Understand experimental techniques for compositional and PVT analysis in the laboratory.
Understand use of compositional and PVT analysis for reservoir and production-technical calculations.
Apply and understand relevant digital tools.
Communicate and explain how petroleum systems work in regard to pressure, volume and temperature for hydrocarbon industry and the society.
Be able to evaluate the potential for hydrocarbon deposits and production of these.
Understanding petroleum reservoirs is one of the key activities for the oil industry in order to manage, increase and maintain reserves. Definition of reservoir rocks, their properties and the pressure, volume and temperature (PVT) conditions that affect their fluids is part of the basic knowledge that both geoscientists and engineers need to confront on a daily basis in the petroleum industry. This course introduces geological, physical and chemical processes that control the PVT conditions, which in turn determine the hydrocarbon fluids at subsurface reservoir conditions. The course includes one geoscientific and one fluid PVT part.

The course has a continuous assessment consisting of two portfolios and one final written exam.
• Portfolio 1: 20% of the total grade
• Portfolio 2: 20% of the total grade
• Final written exam: 60% of the total grade
Both the Portfolios and exam must be passed in order to pass the course.The Portfolioos contains Laboratory reports that are written during the teaching time related to the laboratories. The grade of the portfolio is not given until all the reports have been assessed and the folder as a whole is graded. For the portfolio, there are no resit possibilities. Students who fail or wish to improve their portfolio grade must retake one or both of the portfolios when the course is offered again.

Mandatory lab assignments are to be made at the times and in the groups that are assigned.
Mandatory assignment of laboratoy reports for evaluation.
One cannot expect that provisions for completion of the lab assignments at other times are made unless prior arrangements with the laboratory staff have been agreed upon.
