Practical training in Risk Analysis (RIS560)

In this course, the learning takes place partly in a professional environment outside the university. The purpose of the course is to give students practical experience and the opportunity to immerse themselves in selected issues related to a company's practice. The evaluation will take place based on a critically reflective report from the student as well as a presentation.

In this course, the learning takes place partly in a professional environment outside the university, for example in a technology company or at a research institute, or as part of a larger project at UiS. Internships can also take place under the auspices of an approved student project at the Faculty of science and technology. The student must find a workplace or project that is interested in involving the student in the company's ongoing work. Internship in a student project must be agreed upon with the department's faculty staff/subject teacher responsible for the relevant student project. The purpose of the course is to give students practical experience and the opportunity to immerse themselves in selected issues related to the company's practice. An agreement/contract and plans must be developed between the student, company, and subject teacher to set out practical aspects regarding how the internship will be carried out and how the supervision of the student will take place. The evaluation will take place based on a critically reflective report from the student as well as a presentation. The report shall contain a discussion of a more specific issue related to the company's practice, a reflection of the student’s own contribution to the company, as well as documentation about the work performed and certified timesheets.

Learning outcome

The course is a supplement to other courses, and when the student has completed the course, the following goals shall have been achieved:

  • Increased insight into selected topics and issues, and into the practicalities of working life challenges
  • Explain work tasks and working methods in the current company

Skills:

  • Increased ability for professional collaboration, as well as in-depth study of given topics and abilities to present these aspects in a convincing way
  • Familiarise with assigned work tasks and solve these

General competence:

  • Reflect on own knowledge and learning, and reflect on own role when collaborating with others
  • Submit to the requirements set in the working life context

Required prerequisite knowledge

RIS505 Foundations of Risk Analysis and Risk Science, RIS525 Risk Assessment, Economic Evaluation and Decisions
The student must have completed a minimum of 40 study points according to the approved education plan.

Knowledge related to the practical requirements of the relevant workplace.

The student must submit a critically reflective report (including signed timesheet) on their internship. This report is presented to students and teachers at a specified time and place.The course has a continuous assessment. All parts must be passed to obtain a final grade in the course.NOTE: According to Regulations relating to studies and examinations at the University of Stavanger section 3-10 point 2, a student has 2 attempts in this course, with the opportunity to apply for a 3rd attempt.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course coordinator, the student representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
