Introduction

This is a fully digital course. It provides an introduction to offshore wind energy, covering both technical and non-technical aspects from academic and practical perspectives. The course is broadly designed so that anyone with an interest in offshore wind, regardless of educational or professional background, will benefit from its content by expanding their understanding and knowledge of the industry through enhanced insight into practical interdisciplinary topics.

Content

The main content of the course is organised into modules addressing topics relevant to today’s offshore wind sector, such as energy transformation, offshore wind projects, engineering, operations, economics and legal issues. In addition to lectures delivered by subject specialists, the course content is supplemented with podcasts, interviews and video demonstrations developed in collaboration with industry and organisations. This provides students with multiple perspectives on the learning material.

Learning outcome

Exam system Canvas

No re-sit opportunities are offered for the project assignment. Students who do not pass this assignment can retake it the next time the course is held.

Exam assignment can be done either in Norwegian or English languages.

Exam assignment should be delivered together with the AI declaration form specified by UiS.

Coursework requirements

Mandatory presentation is based on brief individual reflections. The presentation can be recorded and submitted digitally. There will be no physical or online presentations. If the individual presentation is not approved, then the student will have the opportunity to deliver an individual report for assessment.

Individual presentation can be done either in Norwegian or English languages.

Mandatory requirements must be approved by responsible lecturer within the given deadline.

Method of work

Video recorded lecture series, podcasts and interviews with industry, demonstration videos, quizzes and self-assessment measures, as well as own reflections.

Using AI to support learning and study activities

AI tools may be used in WIN100 as a learning aid, but must never substitute for the conceptual understanding and independent critical reasoning the course builds — analysing offshore wind as an interdisciplinary field through the field's perspectives yourself is precisely what you must master. Productive uses include asking AI to explain a concept (e.g., what characterises an offshore-wind project, which methods and standards apply, or how energy transformation happens in offshore wind), to interpret a current case through the lens of course theories, or to generate practice questions for self-testing. You remain responsible for critically evaluating whatever the AI produces, and any use of AI in assessed work must follow the course's guidelines.

Course assessment

The faculty decides whether early dialogue will be held in all courses or in selected groups of courses. The aim is to collect student feedback for improvements during the semester. In addition, a digital course evaluation must be conducted at least every three years to gather students’ experiences.
