What does the Norwegian-American congregation on the prairie in the 1870s have in common with the Norwegian-Pakistani mosque of the 1970s?

Historian Kari Guttormsen Hempel is launching her book Tro på prærien møter tro på Grønland. Migrasjon, religion og integrasjon. Norskamerikansk migrasjon etter 1870 og norskpakistansk etter 1970 at the University Library.
Three key questions are central to the book: What changes occurred within immigrant congregations? What role did religion play in the integration process? And how did immigrants influence the host country?
200 Years
Hempel’s book is especially relevant this year as we mark 200 years of Norwegian emigration to America. The differences between the emigration from Norway starting in 1825 and the immigration to Norway after 1970 are significant. But there are also similarities—such as the importance of religious faith in connection with migration and integration in the new country.
