Book launch with UiS-historian.
Women, Politics, and Social Networks in the Sagas of Norwegian Kings is a new book by Associate Professor of History Markus Eldegard Mindrebø. The book sheds new light on the role women played in the social and political life during the formation of the Norwegian monarchy.
Based on a thorough study of Heimskringla and other Old Norse kings' sagas, the book shows how politics, networks, and power are expressed in these texts. Mindrebø argues that the women in the sagas are granted political influence on par with men, through their active participation in aristocratic social networks and political rituals.
The author will meet with Jóhanna Katrín Friðriksdóttir, author of Women in Old Norse Literature and Valkyrie: Women in the Viking World, for a conversation about women in the kings' sagas and the launch of the book.
