Lecture by Eirik Kvindesland on one of the world's most bitter and dangerous conflicts.

The world held its breath in June when Israel launched its most extensive attack on Iran since the 1980s. Iran responded with drone and bombing raids. Then the United States entered the fray with a massive bombing campaign targeting Iran’s nuclear facilities.

This time, the war was brief and limited. But the danger of a major war in the Middle East was — and still is — looming.

  • How did Iran and Israel, once close allies, end up in one of the world’s most bitter and potentially most dangerous conflicts?
  • What was the relationship between Iranian and Jewish culture before Iran and Israel emerged as modern states?
  • And what does the ongoing rivalry between these two countries mean for the rest of the Middle East, and for the world?

These are the questions Eirik Kvindesland will explore in his lecture, based on his book “Iran og Israel. Gamle venner, nye fiender” (2025).

Kvindesland is a postdoctoral researcher at the Faculty of History at the University of Oxford. He has lived in the Middle East for three years and speaks Arabic, Persian, Hebrew, and French. He is frequently consulted by the media to explain the background of conflicts in the region.
