Outbound exchange as a Freemover student

Individual exchange to an institution University of Stavanger does not have an agreement with.

Published Updated on

Students can go on exchange to institutions with which the University of Stavanger (UiS) does not have an exchange agreement. This is called being a freemover and means that you are responsible for the entire process yourself, without support from the International Office.

Please note that not all institutions accept freemovers. We therefore recommend that students, as a rule, go through established agreements and explore all available options before considering this alternative.

If you choose to apply as a freemover, please involve your student advisor as early as possible.

Remember this when planning your exchange

Familiarise yourself with the host country. Our website provides useful information on what to consider when choosing a country for your exchange.

The institution you are interested in must offer relevant courses that can be pre-approved by your faculty or department. Check that the courses are taught in English (or another language you are proficient in) during the relevant semester and that the institution is approved for any financial support from the Norwegian State Educational Loan Fund (Lånekassen).

When going on exchange as a freemover, you are responsible for managing the application process yourself. The process can be different from regular exchange programs and may be more time-consuming.

There are often documentation requirements, including language tests and motivational letters. You may need to demonstrate your English proficiency level by taking an English test (such as TOEFL or IELTS), where you must meet given minimum requirements. Make sure to schedule this well in advance.

Remember to check if you need vaccines, a student visa, and if there are tuition fees. You must have insurance that covers the entire period of your exchange stay and is suitable for the purpose of your stay. Make sure to arrange it well in advance before you travel.

Please note: When going abroad as a freemover to an institution with which UiS does not have an agreement, you are not eligible for a waiver of any tuition fees or for Erasmus+ grants.

Students on exchange retain their student status at UiS. You must pay the semester fee and confirm your study plan within the given deadlines. Failing to do this will result in losing your right to study at UiS.
