The University of Stavanger is at the forefront of studies within the petroleum engineering- and geosciences field. In this study program you will be taught by internationally recognized professors, use state of the art geo-labs and data programs, and participate in enriching field excursions.

The Master program in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering, developed in close collaboration with the petroleum industry, is uniquely focused on the blending of geosciences and engineering for the specific needs of petroleum exploration and production.

As a graduate of this program you will be able to solve geoscientific problems by integrating surface and subsurface data, and exchange and analyse this information together with petroleum engineers. In addition, you will be able to formulate strategies and have the key fundamental knowledge to develop, manage, and implement technologies in the energy sector.

Graduates are qualified to a broad range of positions in the petroleum industry, and in other industries within energy resources where both engineering and geosciences are applied. With a Master degree in Petroleum Geosciences, you can also qualify for the PhD program in Technology and Natural Science at UiS. 

Career prospects

The Master’s programme in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering educates highly qualified geoscientists for a wide range of jobs in the oil and gas industry. This is an international industry, and master’s students in petroleum geosciences will have many opportunities on the international job market after completing their degree.

Petroleum geoscientists are an important professional group within several business areas and sectors. These include the petroleum or mining industries, the construction sector, the environmental sector, technical organisations, education and research. Today's research and professional careers are characterised by a multidisciplinary approach.

Petroleum geoscientists have the knowledge and background required to work with specialists from other subject areas to solve important tasks for the benefit of society.

A completed Master of Science can qualify for admission to doctoral studies within Petroleum Engineering/Petroleum Geosciences Engineering at the University of Stavanger.

After having completed the master’s programme in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering, the student shall have acquired the following learning outcomes, in terms of knowledge, skills and general competences:

Knowledge

K1: The candidate will have advanced knowledge within the field of petroleum geosciences and specialized insight into a particular area of geosciences.

K2: The candidate will have in-depth knowledge of scientific theories and methods connected to the subject area.

K3: The candidate will be able to apply knowledge to new areas within the subject area, and analyze professional issues based on the history, tradition, distinct nature and societal importance of the subject area. The candidate can use this fundamental knowledge to develop, manage and implement geoscience technology within the petroleum sector.

Skills

S1: The candidate will be able to analyse existing theories, methods and interpretations within petroleum geosciences, and work independently to solve practical and theoretical problems.

S2: The candidate will be able to solve petroleum geoscience problems by integrating different types of data used in the petroleum industry, including surface and subsurface data.

S3: The candidate will be able to independently carry out specialized research or development projects within petroleum geosciences under supervision and in line with current ethical norms of research.

S4: The candidate will be able to evaluate and solve problems on hydrocarbon exploration and production, from a regional to reservoir scale, by interpreting and integrating geological, geophysical and engineering data.

S5: The candidate will be able to optimise hydrocarbon exploration and production by using state-ofthe- art technology and decision making.

General Competence

G1: The candidate will be able to analyze relevant professional, research and ethical issues related to hydrocarbon exploration and production.

G2: The candidate will be able to apply her/his own knowledge and skills to new exploration areas, in order to carry out advanced assignments and projects.

G3: The candidate will be able to communicate information relating to her/his work to other petroleum geoscientists and engineers. The candidate will have an excellent command of the terminology related to the subject area.

G4: The candidate will be able to communicate with the general public, petroleum geoscience issues, analyses and conclusions, thus contributing society with new ideas.

Academic requirements

A bachelor´s degree in Geosciences or equivalent is required.

Applicants with a bachelor's degree in geology and/or engineering degrees will also be considered if they document at least 40 ECTS credits in geosciences/geology/geophysics.

All applicants must have at least 30 ECTS credits in mathematics/statistics/calculus.

Admission to this master's programme requires a minimum grade average comparable to a Norwegian C (according to ECTS Standards) in your bachelor's degree.

Frequently asked questions

Is it possible to take the study as a distance student?

Some of the subjects included in the study program may be taken digitally as a distance student. However, several of the subjects on the program have compulsory laboratory activities, which requires that one is present. You can always consult with the study coordinator or lecturers if you are wondering if a specific course can be completed digitally.



Can I take this study part time?

We do not have a separate part-time plan for this study. But you get the right to study for 3 years by admission to the master's program, with the possibility of a fourth year to complete. This means that you can set up an individual education plan that is not a full-time study. It is a good idea to contact the study coordinator so that you can make a plan together.



Is it possible to get advice on which electives I should choose?

It can be difficult to decide which subjects to choose when the study program consists of so many electives. If you are unsure, you should contact study program leader Lisa Jean Watson or study coordinator Karina Sanni for advice on which subjects you should choose based on your area of ​​interest and academic level.

Can I take courses in Svalbard as part of the degree?

Yes, as a student with us, we recommend that you take courses at the University Center on Svalbard (UNIS) as part of your degree in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering. UNIS has available courses in both the spring semester, the autumn semester and the summer course. When and where can I travel on exchange?

We recommend the 3rd semester as an exchange semester, but it is also possible to travel on an exchange in the 2nd semester. We have several agreements in and outside Europe.

Exchange scheme

In semester 2 or 3 of the Master program in Petroleum Geosciences Engineering, you have the possibility to study abroad at one of UiS partner universities. These semesters have 30 ECTS elective courses.



When going abroad, you must choose courses that provide equivalent specialization within your field, and these must be pre-approved before you leave. It is also important that the courses you are going to take abroad do not overlap in content with the courses you have taken or will take later in the study program. A good tip is to think about your specialization and your field of interest.



It is recommended to start planning the exchange early and to contact your department.

Department of Energy Resources

The Department of Energy Resources is a strong academic environment with international top-level research and education.

The department boasts an international environment, with scientific staff conducting research into energy resources, technology for improved oil recovery (IOR), decision analysis and geology.

The study programmes at the department cover search and exploration of petroleum and natural resources. Internationalization is a priority, with the development of study programs taught in English and high mobility among scientific staff and students.

The department contributes significantly to research activities and management of the The National IOR Centre of Norway, established by the Norwegian Ministry of Petroleum and Energy in 2013.
