Upscaling forum

This forum will focus its work on upscaling procedures needed in the numerical simulation tools and workflows used and developed in the Centre.

This will mainly be a collaboration between activities within Tasks 1 (Core Scale), 3 (Pore Scale), 4 (Upscaling), 6 (Reservoir Simulation), and 7 (Field Scale Evaluation). Deliveries of this work are naturally based on data and experience from core scale experiments and, hence, will require input from such.

The forum will guide the activities and especially establish what deliverables are expected and how these best can be presented and delivered.

Workshops 2020-2021:

  • IORSim - User course 10.12.2020
  • OPM workshop on flow in fractured porous media - September 2021
  • Ensemble based 4D seismic History Matching (HM) workshop - Held October 14.-15. (with 50 + participants).

Recommended practices:

  • Recommended workflow for upscaling of Polymer EOR simulations, report and demonstration
    • Current activities on workflow involves pore, core and field scale. These activities center around IORCoreSim and its state-of-the-art core scale polymer models. We are reviewing/discussing relevant test cases. Collaborating projects: 1.3.3. -> 1.1.1. -> 1.1.15/2.7.1. Coord. prjct 1.4.8.
    • Fall 2021:Deliver report on recommended practices on upscaling of IORCoreSim models to field scale. For specific test cases, see deliverables under Demonstrations
  • Recommended workflow for upscaling of Smart Water EOR simulations, report and demonstration
    • Work will start in 2021
    • Fall 2021: Deliver report on recommended practices on upscaling of IORCoreSim models to field scale. For specific test cases, see deliverables under Demonstrations
  • Recommended workflow on adding 4D seismic data in HM
    • Fall 2021: Finalize report on recommended workflow on adding 4D seismic data in history matching based on Norne and Ekofisk studies and available literature.

    • Program and User’s manual will be updated throughout the project period.

    • Fracture flow modeling in release version and manual of OPM
    • Spring 21: Modeling tools available inopm-models.
    • Tentatively, fall 21: Incorporate capabilities in opm:flow.

Demonstrations:

  • Testing and demonstration of IORCoreSim on polymer and low-sal on different scales
    • Polymer data sets for HPAMin sea water (December 2020)
    • Test of numerical integration method to capture well polymer rheological behavior in well block. 2D rectangular and radial models.
    • 1D linear and 2D cross section models to demonstrate effect of permeability variation and large-scale sub-grid heterogeneities.
  • Testing and demonstration of IORSim on low-sal on different scales by September 2021.
  • Ekofisk full field HM by Q32021.
  • Ekofisk sector model, geological realistic models (fractures)
    • Journal paper and software development in parallel:
      • Use case: Seismic analysis in vicinity of cement job, model parametrization (e.g. seismic attributes) and model evaluation (e.g. 4D seismic anomalies)
      • Paper: By Q2/O3 2021: Paper reviewed and published
      • Software development: By Q2/Q3 2021: Scripts available in DELFI. Training course / hackathon offered to IOR Centre partners.
