The main research areas at the department are energy resources, technology for increased oil recovery (IOR), decision analysis, and geosciences.

    The National IOR Centre of Norway

    Awarded by the Research Council of Norway after a national competition, The National IOR Centre of Norway started up in December 2013. The Centre provides solutions for improved oil recovery on the Norwegian continental shelf through academic excellence and close cooperation with the industry. The goal is to develop new knowledge and technology in order to increase recovery beyond projections under today's field operation plans.

    Geographic information science (GIS) research focuses on the analysis of spatial relationships, defining uncertainty, and using GIS for decision-making.

    Structural geology

    Structural Geology is the study of tectonic deformation. We focus on the deformation of the upper crust and how it affects erosion and sedimentation in sedimentary basins, forms faults and folds that compartmentalize reservoirs, and makes ductile materials, such as salt, flow.

    Regional basin studies

    Basin scale studies focus on improving the understanding of paleogeographic evolution, tectonic and sedimentary interaction, and petroleum systems by integrating surface and subsurface data.

    Provenance

    Provenance research tracks the transport routes of sediment. Such research is done for various reasons, such as paleogeographic, paleogeologic, and tectonic reconstructions of basins, basin surroundings, and continental-plate configurations. The research can help to reconstruct both basin and basement evolution, for instance by estimating erosion rates. It also can be applied to archeometry to reveal the origin of materials used by early humans, and in forensic sciences.
