Hypocretin-1 – CNS functions and measurement in cerebrospinal fluid

The presentation will focus on the function of hypocretin-1 in the central nervous system (CNS). Hypocretin-1 and -2 are neuropeptides produced in specific neurons in the lateral hypothalamus. While hypocretin-2 has a short half-life and unknown functions, hypocretin-1 is believed to have a fundamental role in arousal and wakefulness. Reduced levels of hypocretin-1 leads to narcolepsy with cataplexy (narcolepsy type 1), a chronic neurological disorder characterized by excessive daytime sleepiness, disturbed nocturnal sleep, and sudden loss of muscle tone. Data from development of a new method for measurement of hypocretin-1 in cerebrospinal fluid will also be presented.
