Boschma is Full Professor in Regional Economics at the Department of Social Geography and Planning at the Faculty of Geosciences, University of Utrecht, the Netherlands. Since January 2013, Boschma is also Full Professor in Innovation Studies at Lund University in Sweden and from 2017 Professor II at the UiS Business School.
Boschma is research director at the Department of Social Geography and Planning at Utrecht University. Boschma, among others, has laid the foundations of a new influential stream in Economic Geography, that is, Evolutionary Economic Geography.
In the period 2013-2015, Boschma has been director of the Centre for Innovation, Research and Competence in the Learning Economy (CIRCLE) at Lund University, which is one the largest research centers on Innovation Studies in Europe.
Boschma has published in international journals on Evolutionary Economic Geography, the spatial evolution of industries, geography of innovation, the structure and evolution of spatial networks, agglomeration externalities and regional growth, and regional diversification. Rickman and Winters (2015, p. 22) ranked Boschma number 1 in the field of Regional Science, based on Impact Factor Weighted Publications in the Core Regional Science Journals 2010-2014.
Boschma received a Honorary Doctorate in Natural Sciences ("Doktor der Naturwissenschaften ehrenhalber") from Marburg University (Fachbereich Geographie) in Germany in July 2013.
