There is growing evidence that patients and their informal caregivers often develop innovative solutions to help them cope with their health disorders. In some cases, patients were even able to save their own lives. However, these innovations only rarely diffuse (e.g. Oliveira et al. 2015, Zejnilovic et al. 2016). To facilitate the sharing and diffusion of medical innovations developed by patients and caregivers, we created an online platform, www.patient-innovation.com where patients and caregivers can share solutions they developed for themselves to the benefit of others afflicted with the same health condition. In 4 years, over 1600 innovations were submitted (and about 850 were “medically screened” and approved by our medical team) from a community of 100.000 patients/caregivers in the 5 continents. In this talk we will discuss the potential of both patients and their informal caregivers to revolutionize healthcare.
