THE EXHIBITIONS
Discover Rogaland’s history through our exhibitions: The exhibitions take you through thousands of years of Rogaland's past, from the end of the Ice Age up to the Middle Ages!
Ice Age → Stone Age → Bronze Age → Iron Age → Viking Age → Middle Ages
- The Ice Age: Meet the Polar Bear from Finnøy — the world’s oldest known polar bear, which ended its days here in the region at the end of the Ice Age.
- The Stone Age: Meet the Viste Boy, a 15-year-old from Vistehola in Randaberg who died 8,200 years ago. He now rests on a bed of shells in a quiet room at the museum, inviting reflection on life in prehistoric Rogaland. In the Stone Age exhibition, discover what everyday life in the region was like thousands of years ago.
- The Bronze Age: Step into the world of the Bronze Age woman and explore discoveries that reveal myths, mystery, and the sun cult. These unique finds offer insight into the spiritual lives of the people who lived in Rogaland between 1700 and 500 BC.
- The Iron Age: The exhibition highlights goldsmithing and textile craftsmanship of exceptional quality, featuring some of the finest finds from our region, dating from around the birth of Christ to AD 550.
- The Viking Age: In World of the Vikings, the exhibition explores how the Vikings not only travelled the world but also helped shape it—and how the world, in turn, changed them.
- The Middle Ages: Explore the “Secrets of the Cathedral”. What has been hidden in Stavanger Cathedral, right under our noses, all these centuries? This exhibition reveals new and exciting discoveries uncovered during the extensive restoration.
Don’t forget to check out:
- "Årdalsringene", the silver armrings in "World of the Vikings".
- The "Rennesøy Treasure", gold bracteates in the Iron Age exhibition - one of the latest finds by metal detectorists.
- Authentic rune stones in the foyer.
