Tales of the unexpected: in paintings conservation by Mary Kempski; Jo Kirby; Victoria Leanse; Kristina Mandy (Editors)
Conservators' prolonged proximity to paintings makes them ideally placed to notice anything unusual or surprising which might arise during examination or treatment. Ensuing investigations, often aided by technical analysis, include the recent increasingly widespread use of macro X-ray fluorescence (MA-XRF) scanning which has led to a raft of new discoveries. The papers in this volume, presented at the British Association of Paintings Conservator-Restorers' conference 'Tales of the Unexpected' in Conservation', look at the unexpected from a variety of periods and places of origin, and from a range of perspectives: practical, technical, historical and ethical.

The Evolution of Paleolithic Technologies av Steven L. Kuhn
The Evolution of Paleolithic Technologies provides a novel perspective on long-term trajectories of evolutionary change in Paleolithic tools and tool-makers. Members of the human lineage have been producing stone tools for more than 3 million years. These artefacts provide key evidence for important evolutionary developments in hominin behaviour and cognition. Avoiding conventional approaches based on progressive stages of development, this book instead examines global trends in six separate dimensions of technological behaviour between 2.6 million and 10,000 years ago. Combining these independent trends results in both a broader and a more finely punctuated perspective on key intervals of change in hominin behaviour. To draw this picture together, the concluding section explores behavioural, cognitive, and demographic implications of developments in material culture and technological procedures at seven key intervals during the Pleistocene.
Gender stereotypes in archaeology : a short reflection in image and text av Laura Coltofean-Arizancu, Bisserka Gaydarska & Uroš Matić ; illustrations by Nikola Radosavljević
Were men the only hunters and producers of tools, art and innovation in prehistory? Were women the only gatherers, home-bound breeders and caregivers? Are all prehistoric female depictions mother goddesses? And do women and men have equal career chances in archaeology? To put it short, no. However, these are some of the gender stereotypes that we still encounter on a daily basis in archaeology from the way archaeologists interpret the past and present it to the general public to how they practice it as a profession. This booklet is a short but informative and critical response by archaeologists to various gender stereotypes that exist in the archaeological explanation of the past, as well as in the contemporary disciplinary practice.
The great Indo-European horse sacrifice : 4000 years of cosmological continuity from Sintashta and the Steppe to Scandinavian Skeid av Anders Kaliff & Terje Oestigaard
The great Indo-European horse sacrifice is one of the most enduring and widespread traditions in world history. This study presents a historic overview of Indo-European studies and shows the cosmological continuity of the horse-sacrificial tradition based on specific cultural innovations and ecological adaptations over time. It also sheds new light on cultural history through in-depth analysis of horse sacrifice in culture and cosmology. From Sintashta in Russia and the steppes to the legendary ashwamedha ritual in India and horse sacrifices in Roman, Greek and Irish traditions, the analysis finds that horse sacrifice appears to have been most successful in Scandinavia, with classic sites and funerals such as Sagaholm, Kivik and Håga in the Bronze Age and Old Uppsala, Rakne and Oseberg in the Iron Age.
