About Łukasz Kwiatkowski
Łukasz Kwiatkowski born in 1981 in Łódź. He began learning to play the piano in the class of Barbara Ligęza at the Henryk Wieniawski State Primary Music School in Łódź. He continued his music education under the supervision of Prof. Anna Wesołowska-Firlej at the Henryk Wieniawski Secondary Music School in Łódź, from which he graduated with honours. In 2005, he graduated with honours from the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź in the piano class of Prof. Anna Wesołowska-Firlej. In 2003–2004, as a scholarship holder, he studied at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff in the piano class of Michael Schreider. In addition, he was developing his piano skills at international and national master classes run by such artists as Halina Czerny-Stefańska, Dominique Merlet, Alicja Paleta-Bugaj, Cyprien Katsaris, Jeffrey Swann, Konstantin Scherbakov, Irina Ossipova, Artur Pizarro, Christopher Elton, or Klaus Hellwig.
He has won numerous awards and scholarships. In his school years, he was a scholarship holder of the Polish Children’s Fund. He received a scholarship of the Minister of Culture and Art for 2003–2004. In October 2012, he obtained the Scholarship of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for Outstanding Young Scientists for 2012–2014. In 2014, he was honoured with the Award of the Polish Academy of Science. In 2020, he received a scholarship of the Minister of Culture and National Heritage for the implementation of the project Romantics. Known and Unknown – Fryderyk Chopin and Florian Stanisław Miładowski, whose aim is to popularize the works of two Polish composers of the Romantic era – the outstanding Fryderyk Chopin and the forgotten Florian Stanisław Miładowski. The recording of Miładowski’s works is their world phonographic premiere.
He has participated in numerous piano and chamber music competitions, winning numerous prizes, e.g. the 2nd prize in the International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition in Szafarnia, 2nd prize and a special award in the International Piano Competition in Košice, 3rd prize in the All-Polish French Music Competition in Łódź, 2nd prize for a piano quintet in the 14th Kiejstut Bacewicz International Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition in Łódź (2001), ‘Grindea Award’ for the most promising young musician in London (2001), 4th prize in the International Music Competition in London (2003), 1st prize and a special award for a piano trio in the 17th Kiejstut Bacewicz International Intercollegiate Chamber Music Competition in Łódź (2004), or 1st prize at the Concerto Trials Finals in Cardiff (2004). Together with violinist Ludwika Maja Tomaszewska-Klimek, as part of the Duo Subito ensemble, he has won such awards as the 5th prize in the International Chamber Music Competition in Val Tidone (2008), 2nd prize in the International Chamber Music Competition in Verona, and a special award in the 17th Perrenoud Foundation International Music Competition in Vienna (2009).
As a soloist and chamber musician, he has participated in many concerts in Poland and abroad, e.g. at the Artur Rubinstein Philharmonic in Łódź, the Feliks Nowowiejski Warmia and Mazury Philharmonic in Olsztyn, in the Birthplace of Fryderyk Chopin in Żelazowa Wola, in the Chopin Centre in Szafarnia, in the Fryderyk Chopin European Art Centre in Sanniki, at the Royal Castle in Warsaw, in Antonin – during the 12th Chopin Confrontations, in Tarnów – as part of the ‘Talent Week,’ at the Witold Lutosławski Concert Studio of Polish Radio in Warsaw, the Collegium Maius of the Jagiellonian University in Cracow, the 5th Silent Music Festival in Toruń, in the Mirror Hall of the Poznański Family Palace in Łódź – a solo recital ‘Tribute to Artur Rubinstein,’ at the Atma villa in Zakopane, and in numerous recitals as part of the ‘Musical Soirées’ at the Academy of Music in Łódź and as part of the ‘Music at the University of Technology’ cycle in Łódź, at the National Philharmonic in Sofia, St Martin-in-the-Fields in London, St David’s Hall in Cardiff, in Nohant – at the Chopin Festival, as well as in Weimar, Stuttgart, Chicago, Columbus, Mexico, Bösendorfer-Saal in Vienna, at the Primavera Festival in Italy, in Chile – with solo piano recitals in Antofagasta, Chillán, Concepción, Iquique, Santiago de Chile, La Serena, Punta Arenas, Viña del Mar (Palacio Rioja), and in 2013 at the International Music Festival ‘Semanas Musicales’ in Frutillar.
He has recorded for Polish Radio and Łódź Radio as well as for Television in Chile. In 2014, his solo CD with piano works entitled Bach – Busoni (DUX 0934) was released. Another solo album, containing piano works by Leopold Godowski, was released in 2018 (DUX 1464). Both albums won critical acclaim in Poland and of foreign radio stations and music magazines. In 2021 his 2 CDs album was released with the works of Florian Stanisław Miladowski and Fryderic Chopin (DUX 1742/43)
He is the author of two monographs: Johann Sebastian Bach’s Music in the Piano Works of Ferruccio Busoni (Wydawnictwo Muzyczne Polihymnia, Lublin 2013) and Leopold Godowski and his Contribution to the Development of Pianism at the Turn of the 20th Century (Polihymnia, 2018).
He has run piano master classes in Poland and abroad, including in College of Fine Arts in Ohio (United States, 2007), Conservatorio de Música in Santiago (Chile, 2011), and Escuela de Cultura y Difusión Artística Claudio Arrau León in Chillán (Chile, 2017).
In 2005, he began working as a lecturer and researcher at the Grażyna and Kiejstut Bacewicz Academy of Music in Łódź as an assistant in the piano class of Prof. Anna Wesołowska-Firlej. In 2013, he obtained the title of Doctor of Musical Arts and in 2018 – a postdoctoral degree of habilitated Doctor of Musical Arts. Currently, he is an associate professor at the Chair of Piano, where he has his own piano class. Since September 2020, he has been the head of the Institute of Piano, Organ, Church Music, Harpsichord, and Early Instruments at his alma mater.
