PhD Skills Development Courses

In addition to subject-specific courses, UiS offers training aiming at the development of personal and professional skills that are useful in a future working life, whether it is in or outside academia. Most of the courses are held on a half-yearly or yearly basis, whereas others can be one-time courses. PhD candidates and Postdocs at UiS will find the annoucements for upcoming courses on our Intranet and will be informed via e-mail.

Getting the best out of your supervision

Managing the relationship with your supervisor(s) throughout your research degree can be highly challenging, as well as greatly rewarding.

This course will look at the different expectations that supervisors and students have of the doctoral process. It will help you to clarify what you need from your supervisor(s) and identify a range of approaches for getting the best from busy academic staff.

Impact and Research Communication

This interactive workshop is designed to develop the necessary skills for effectively communicating the significance and value of specialist research to those outside the discipline.

Participants learn how to make a powerful case for their project in grant applications, job applications or publishing proposals, and develop their ability to engage wider audiences for presentations, public engagement, outreach and dealing with the media. Practical exercises encourage a focus on the purpose, impact, outcomes, benefits and applications of participants’ research.

Presenting Science Visually

This introductory course focuses on the use of text and visual elements in order to deliver information and messages in the medium of posters.

The tool we will concentrate on in the course is PowerPoint, and you will learn how to use its broad potential when it comes to setting up documents and posters, producing content and finalizing the product in form of print-outs or PDF-files. Course prerequisite is basic knowledge of how to use power-point.

Turbocharge your writing

The aim of this three hours workshop (webinar) is to help the participants increase their writing outputs through clear and practical strategies.

This workshop will help you to understand:

  • why it's hard to get started
  • how we deliberately use distractions to slow down writing
  • the principles of quick starting
  • how to deal with destructive internal beliefs
  • how to set a writing plan and stick to it
  • how to set achievable goals by writing in a silo
  • how to greatly increase the number of actual words you produce
  • how to clarify your thinking, and improve the quality of your work

On Stage - voice, body language and nerves

The aim of this course split over two half-days is to equip you with crucial presentation techniques in orderto be more comfortable on stage and focus on delivering your message to the audience.

The main objectives of the course are to further develop your competences in presentations skills, achieving contact with the audience and managing stage fright.

Interview Training Workshop

The aim of this workshop is to offer participants advice and information about the different types and purpose of interviews, as well as the opportunity to do some practice in peer groups.

We are aiming to invite one or two professionals to take part in the mock interview panel.

By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • be more aware of how to communicate skills and experiences effectively to different employers;
  • be more knowledgeable about how to structure a CV and covering letter;
  • understand the fundamental purpose of an interview and how to present themselves to employers;
  • feel more confident to present themselves effectively in an interview;
  • have formulated a personal action plan to follow up after the workshop.

Academic Writing for PhD candidates 

This workshop deals with the different dimensions of successful academic writing.

Participants will learn how to establish good writing habits, how to form core arguments, develop structure and make sensible use of headings, figures and tables. The focus will be on the scientific article as one of the most common genres of scientific writing.

Writing the "kappe" of Your PhD Thesis

A thesis by publication comprises not only the articles aimed at publication, but also the narrative (“kappe”) that is intended to convince your examiners that you have successfully met the criteria of “doctorateness”.

In this one-day workshop, we reflect on what your examiners want to you demonstrate, discuss how to approach the writing process, and look at the elements of a good “kappe”.

Planning your next career steps

This 1.5 day digital workshop is aimed at PhDs and postdocs, to help you understand the basic theory of career planning, and be able to apply it to your own career strategy.

To be more knowledgeable about your own skills and interests and able to link this with potential careers; to be more knowledgeable about job-seeking strategies; to be better able to present yourselves in person and online; and to feel more confident about the structure and content of your CV and how to adapt it to different jobs, as well as giving you a personal plan of action to follow up after the digital workshop.

Innovation and project comprehension

The purpose of the course is to raise awareness among PhD candidates about the practical implications of their research.

This involves understanding how research results can lead to innovation, i.e. implemented to achieve the intended utility value for society. Another intention is to increase the candidates' awareness about the further societal implications of research and innovation.

PhD Get Started - Introductory webinar for new PhD candidates

The aim of this half -day introductory webinar is to provide general information on PhD training at UiS and make the PhD candidate familiar with the different parts, key milestones and main challenges of their doctoral training.

The webinar will cover topics such as “An ideal course of studies”, “Supervision”, “Career Planning”.

The webinar is organized on institutional level and is to be seen as complementary to possible introductory courses on faculty level. Previous participants have found the seminar very useful, and we would like to encourage you to join us for the upcoming webinar.

PhD on Track

PhD on Track is a web resource aimed primarily at PhD candidates and early career researchers.

The aim is to enable beginning researchers to easily access information on searching and reviewing scholarly literature, on academic writing, and on sharing and publishing reports and data. The project, PhD on Track, is a collaboration between five Norwegian university libraries. Visit the UiS Library's website for information about other services.
