Bio

I am a conservation scientist whose expertise is on bone taphonomy and diagenesis, but who also has experience with stable isotope work, radiocarbon dating, and aDNA analysis. I have worked for more than ten years within Norwegian archaeology, conservation and heritage management. The work on my MSc thesis, where I carried out a study of palaeodiet based on the chemical analyses of ancient human and animal bones, initiated my great interest in ancient bone and its information potential. Having an undergraduate degree in conservation it was natural to continue working in the border region between conservation and archaeological sciences. My PhD-project was part of a Marie Curie Innovative Training Network, LeCHE. During this project I developed and tested a set of simple screening techniques to identify bone material best suited for scientific analyses such as ancient DNA. I am now one of few specialists in the world on histotaphonomy, applying histological analysis to assess and study preservation and degradation processes in skeletal remains.
