Jonas Fossli Gjersø is an Associate Professor of History researching subjects related to empire, abolition and energy. He is the Current Debates Editor for The Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History and is currently serving as the department's Academic Programme Director for History (studieprogramleder for historie). 

His PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science (2015) considered British imperialism in East Africa, whilst his postdoctoral research project at the University of Oslo investigated Norwegian and international petroleum history. His publications include The Scramble for East Africa (2015) and The Great Leap Offshore (2023). His op-eds and book reviews have featured in International Affairs, Historisk Tidsskrift, Tidsskrift for samfunnsforskning, OpenDemocracy, Impakter Magazine, Dagsavisen, Aftenbladet and he has appeared on BBC World, NRK Dagsnytt 18, NRK P2 Ekko, NRK P2 Studio 2, NRK Rogaland, Fortid, the Land & Climate Review Podcast and Historikeren. 

Dr Gjersø has taught international, imperial and economic history at the LSE, Goldsmiths - University of London, the University of Oslo, BI Norwegian Business School in Oslo & in Stavanger, at the University of Stavanger (UiS) and at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). These courses include: From Empire to Independence: The Extra-European World in the Twentieth Century (LSE), International History since 1890 (LSE), Empires in Comparative Perspective: Imperium Romanum to Pax Americana (Goldsmiths), Key Issues in Modern International and Transnational History (Uni. At UiS he is the Course Convenor for Modern History (emneansvarlig for (L)HIS165 Moderne historie) and the undergraduate dissertation seminar (emneansvarlig for HIS290 Bacheloroppgave i historie). He is happy to supervise projects broadly related to his research interests.
