Olga Gjerald is Associate Professor in Service Management at the Norwegian School of Hotel Management, University of Stavanger, Norway. She holds a PhD in Leadership from the University of Stavanger, focusing on basic assumptions of service employees about guests, co-workers and competitors in relation to employee job outcomes. Her main research interests include service organization, human resource management and employment in tourism and hospitality, visitor experiences and visitor behaviour in hospitality and tourism. 

Gjerald has published in highly ranked academic journals in the tourism and hospitality field: International Journal of Hospitality Management, Tourism Management Perspectives, Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism, International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, as well as in other internationally recognized journals. Being part of international research group on Work Inclusion in Hospitality and Tourism (WITH), Gjerald has contributed to an edited volume on Tourism Employment in Nordic countries, published at Palgrave Macmillan in 2020. Gjerald is also Associate Member of European Association of Work and Organizational Psychology (EAWOP) and regularly presents her research at the EAWOP congress.

Gjerald’s research interest also lies in tourism overcrowding both in the context of visitor attractions and concerning peer-to-peer accommodation platforms. Gjerald has contributed to an edited book on peer-to-peer accommodations and community resilience, forthcoming at CABI Publishing in 2022, with a chapter entitled “Airbnb guests’ pro-environmental behaviour and community resilience: Mitigating the negative impacts of Airbnb tourism”. Gjerald´s most cited study addresses tourism’s negative and positive sociocultural impacts at the North Cape.

Gjerald is member of Nordic Society for Tourism and Hospitality Research. She participates at the annual Nordic Symposium of Tourism and Hospitality Research both as co-chair of session on tourism and hospitality employment and as presenter.  In addition to her research work experience, Gjerald has extensive knowledge of and work experience in the tourism and hospitality industry (as guide, hotel employee and sales and marketing manager). Gjerald has also experience in North-South Exchange facilitated by NOREC/ FK Norway Fredskorpset (Norwegian Peace Corps) to Madagascar, where she worked on developing a bachelor program in sustainable tourism. Gjerald has frequently been used as an expert by the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education (NOKUT) during the accreditation process of vocational study programs in the field of hospitality, tourism and business.
