Thomas Bjørnsen har doktorgrad i treningsfysiologi, som er skrevet med hovedfokus på adaptasjonsprosesser i skjelettmuskulatur etter styrketrening med redusert blodstrøm. Bjørnsen har publisert over 35 vitenskapelige artikler i internasjonalt anerkjente tidsskrifter (Se Researchgate). Forskningen har i stor grad basert seg på intervensjonsstudier for utvikling av styrke, spenst, hurtighet og muskelmasse hos omkring 400 toppidrettsutøvere, samt restitusjons- og tilpasningsprosesser etter styrketrening, og idrettsernæring.

Bjørnsen har vært ansatt i en bistilling i Olympiatoppen som ansvarlig fagkonsulent for kraft/styrke med oppfølging av idrettsutøvere og trenere på tvers av flere idretter siden 2015, og med oppfølging av utøvere som fysisk trener siden 2007.

Bjørnsen underviser i fysiologi, idrettsernæring, treningslære og prestasjonsutvikling. Han veileder på bachelor, master og phd-nivå.
