This course covers important and modern seismic interpretation methods with practical applications within exploration and production of hydrocarbons. The course defines a link between geology and geophysical data, and presents methods for extraction of geological information from seismic data. Practical methods for prediction of lithology and pore fluid from seismic data is a central part of the course.
Course description for study year 2021-2022

The students will get a fundamental and broad knowledge on the use of seismic data in exploration and production of hydrocarbons. This includes elasticity theory, rock physics, seismic data, seismic modelling, amplitude versus offset (AVO) analysis, seismic trace inversion, lithology and fluid prediction, fundamental inverse problem theory, and seismic prestack inversion. The students will also get digital knowledge on software applications for seismic analysis and inversion, programming and modern machine learning.
The students will achieve skills to perform seismic data quality evaluation, seismic amplitude analysis and inversion for applications within exploration and production of hydrocarbons, including prediction of lithology and pore fluid from seismic data. The students will also achieve skills to apply computers for seismic analysis and inversion, and skills to program numerical software for geo-applications.
The students will get a general competence within seismic data analysis for interpretation and extraction of geological information from seismic data.
Rock physics, seismic waves, seismic modeling, seismic amplitudes versus offset (AVO) analysis and seismic inversion. Prediction of lithology and pore fluid from seismic data. Introduction to machine learning. Computer exercises and geo-programming.
In order to get access to the exam, the student must have passed two mandatory computer exercises in the course. If a student do not pass one or both of the exercises, he/she will not get access to assessment in the course.
