Reservoir characterization is an essential part of any field development projects where a series of laboratory, logging and well testing measurements are made to evaluate the feasibility of reservoirs in terms of hydrocarbon storage and production performance. In this course, Special Core Analysis Laboratory (SCAL) measurements are integrated with the wireline logging and well testing programme to understand how hydrocarbon reservoirs can be fully characterization by the combination of laboratory and field data. Practical projects from different fields/wells of Norway are given and students are introduced to industry relevant software for a full understanding of dealing with real data on different occasions.

Learning outcome
Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:
  • Interpret core analysis data to derive petrophysical properties of rocks in laboratory.
  • Understand the wireline logging operations, data acquisition and corrections.
  • Interpret wireline logs to identify reservoirs, their lithology and type of hydrocarbon
  • Recognize the signature of well test data and identify well type, reservoir boundaries, and compartmentation
  • Do a complete petrophysical field evaluation based on cores, logs and well test data
  • Use appropriate software for interpretation of core, logs and well test data
Formation Evaluation attempts to integrate core-based data analysis with the wireline logs and well test data for a complete characterization and evaluation of hydrocarbon reserves in different geological formations. In the first part of the course, students are exposed to Special Core Analysis Laboratory (SCAL) measurements where measurements to obtain relative permeability and capillary pressure are discussed and a project is given for a deeper understanding. This is followed by the wireline logging section where interpretation of lithology and determination of petrophysical properties are presented on the field scale. Different precautions and corrections are delivered in this section and identification of reservoir intervals are exercised through a real case study from a Norwegian field. In the last part of the course, well testing data analysis are delivered where the main emphasis would be on the time dependent pressure data or Pressure Transient Analysis (PTA). Such analysis must be done to determine the performance of the wellbore during production or identify types of reservoirs, wellbores and boundaries (faults, fractures and aquifers). The PTA will also be practiced more deeply using a real field data analysis from a wellbore in Norway.
Required prerequisite knowledge
No prior knowldge is required but applicants for single subjects need to meet the requirements for admission to the master program in Petroleum Engineering.
Recommended prerequisites
Prior knowledge of geology and petrophysics would be useful.

All parts must be passed in order to obtain a final grade in the course.The course has a continuous assessment consisting of two portfolios and one project report with an oral presentation: 
• Portfolio 1 SCAL project report: 25%
• Portfolio 2 Well testing project report 25%
• Project report with an oral presentation 50% 

All parts must be passed in order to obtain a final grade in the course. There is no resit exam. Students who wish to take one or more of the assessment parts can do this the following year/next time the course is offered.

Method of work
Lectures, theoretical and practical exercises including interpretation of wireline logs and well testing data. Evaluation will be based on the projects.
