This course was originally developed in collaboration with Statoil, the Petroleum Safety Authority, and Institute for Energy technology (IFE). It covers a range of issues, theories, principles and practices related to the HTO and HF.

The course will give you increased knowledge on various human-technological-organizational/human factor aspects related to design, operations, and management of complex technical systems in different industrial settings, that can help minimize unwanted events as well as increasing productivity.

Risk and Complex systems perspective are the core of the course, which also includes models, methodologies, and standards at both macro and micro level in modern systems. Bringing different disciplines and business expertise together to address and exploit the different perspectives of HTO projects is central to the course

Potential candidates

The programme is highly relevant for both the private and the public sector. It is aimed at engineers with activities related to engineering systems, industrial production, process, design, operation and maintenance, risk management and cost engineering.

Examples of what you learn

  • Knowledge and understanding on the critical interface between human, organizational, and technological aspects in the design and operation of complex systems
  • Up to date knowledge on the theories and principles on human factors engineering
  • The interface between human-technology-organization and Systems risk
  • Dealing with complex interfaces in the design and deployment of complex technological systems
  • Understanding of Systems perspective in managing technically and operationally complex environments

  • Application of tools, methods, and techniques to improve safety and productivity in work systems
  • Ability to analyze the complexities of interaction between technology, humans and organizational processes
  • Integration of complex human and organizational aspects in the design and operation of engineering systems

The course is held by Professor Jayantha P. Liyanage.

Read more about him here.

The course is divided into four modules:

  • Introduction to HTO/HF, human characteristics, assumptions, and limitations
  • Organizational relationships and work processes
  • Design and operation of complex technological systems
  • Systems perspective of complex technological environments

Lecture Dates

All lectures of MTO/HF course will be digital.

Lectures will be held following days through Microsoft Team / ZOOM.

There will be other individual/group based learning activities designed into the course in-between lecture days’’.

The course Compendium and the detailed Lecture schedule with learning activities will be posted to all applicants prior to the course start-up date.

For any questions, feel free to contact the Course responsible (‘Fagansvarlig’): Prof. Jayantha P. Liyanage (j.p.liyanage@uis.no )

The programme uses Canvas as communication platform, and all the lectures are held in English.
