This course aims to support English teachers working in the Norwegian school system to develop the necessary knowledge of English as a school subject and the skills to teach it in ways that learners find motivating and meaningful. In addition teachers will learn how to support their learners as they become more autonomous. English teachers need to be able to teach in a way that includes well-founded principles and theories from current research and the Norwegian curriculum for English.

Practice English

English teaching methodology 1 aims to offer an overview of the most important aspects of language teaching in the Norwegian context. It is expected that students will use every opportunity to practice and to use English throughout the course. The students will try out, reflect on, evaluate and discuss their work with a focus on language learning. The assignments for the semesters are listed under Evaluation in the textbox. The course will also meet for one week in York at the Norwegian study centre.

The course is a combination of meeting days (one set of three days and two sets of two days each semester) with lectures, small groups, discussions, demonstrations and practical exercises, and internet-based student work including written discussion forums, and audio/video group sessions and online advisory meetings. English will be used as the language of communication throughout the course.

Reading periods

Between meeting dates there will be reading periods, time to complete various assignments and academic contact via Canvas, where lecture notes and other support material will be available for students. Students are expected to watch online course videos between sessions and complete the accompanying review material. Students will be expected to be able to discuss subject content both orally and in writing, and to be able to exchange perspective and experiences with others based on language learning and English didactic knowledge.

Students are required to have a stable and fast internet connection, as well as a microphone headset. Students will also be required to download free audio recording software to be used for speaking-related assignments. The didactic assignments will focus on being able to plan and complete three lesson plans and be able to provide theoretical and didactic support for the choices made. Thus, students are required to have access to a class where they can teach English.

Lesson study

The second semester students will complete a Lesson Study cycle in groups of 2 or 3. Lesson study is a form of systematic teacher cooperative learning where a group of teachers together decide what they want to learn and improve upon in their own teaching practice (a research topic). The cycle includes setting learning aims and planning, teaching the lesson and observation resulting in collection of information and data, discussion of consequences of the choices made based on the data collected, and either summarizing what has been learned and sharing this or revision and re-teaching of the lesson. It is required that students work together on the Lesson study project between sessions.

This is a group project that will be introduce and work on during an in-class workshop and continued primarily outside of class by the teaching groups, resulting in a portfolio (pass-fail group work, two group written graded assignments, and two audio assignments), and a group presentation.
