You will learn how to make a difference in culture and community development by using a range of cloud-based business technology and evaluating the risks associated with implementing them.

During the course, a variety of cloud-based technology will be reviewed including the sharing economy, “software-as-service” business models, freemium business models, and “pay-as-you-go” models. Examples from the hospitality and healthcare sectors will be used to highlight products, services, and solutions.

You will actively learn how to use a range of cloud-based business technology and evaluate the risks associated with the implementation of this technology. Moreover, you will reflect on your current and future technology usage in relation to the UN’s sustainability goals. You will learn how become a better consumer of technology. 

The course teaches how to pitch and present a solution and how networking can increase understanding of the needs in the service industry. Throughout the course you will evaluate technological platforms from Norway, the Nordics, but also platforms with a global perspective.

Learning Outcomes

After completing the course, you should have the following knowledge, skills, and general competencies:


  • Basic understanding of technology products, services, and solutions in the hospitality and healthcare industry
  • Knowledge about the role of cloud-based technology in community development
  • Able to recognise the difference between entrepreneurship and innovation
  • Knowledge of risks related to cloud-based technology
  • Understand society’s and the service industry’s need for technology and cloud-based services

Required Prerequisite Knowledge

The course is open to individuals with a Norwegian social security number.

There are no pre-requisite courses required.

The general requirement for entry is completion of secondary education at advanced level, equivalent to passing the exam at the end of Norwegian secondary school, is the general basic requirement for entry. Read more here:

Participation/Work Requirements

  • Required participation (over 80% attendance) in the five live Zoom sessions
  • Internet access and personal computer is required
  • You are required to have microphone/headphones/camera for the Zoom sessions
  • Online access weekly in order to complete assignments, lectures, case studies, quizzes, and other course content made available on Canvas

Course Portfolio (600 points)3/5A - FAll.

There are two quizzes during the semester that cover material assigned in coordination with the course. Each quiz is worth up to 200 points and is submitted individually. The quizzes account for 2/5 of the final grade, or up to 400 points. Both quizzes must be completed to be eligible to take the Course Portfolio.

The Course Portfolio has two sections: creation of a project plan in response to a given case-study and a term paper submitted individually. The Course Portfolio is worth 3/5 of the final grade, or up to 600 points.

In the case of a re-sit exam, the student must retake the complete portfolio with the two sections.

Submissions should be in English, but grammatical errors will not affect the grade.

Method of Work

This course will be delivered online in a hybrid format. This included five synchronous (live) lectures on Zoom, and eight sessions of asynchronous (self-study) on Canvas. Various technology will be used including Zoom, Canvas, Padlet, etc.

The course content will be delivered over a twelve-week period. Internet access, microphone, headphone, computer, and camera are required.

The course will be delivered in English. Syllabus literature, industry research, case studies, virtual modules, online discussions, and guest lectures will be incorporated into the course.
