Henriette Thune, Dean of Research at The Faculty of Health Sciences, emphasizes the uniqueness of being able to employ 7 postdoctors in the same thematic area at once, and urges relevant candidates to apply for the positions:

– We now have the exceptional possibility of offering up to 7 postdocs to parallelly work with amazing teams on two different, inter-disciplinary COVID-19 projects at the University of Stavanger, related to pandemic risk and science communication. Do come join us!

The positions are divided into two different advertisements. Please see both for a complete overview of the available postdoctoral positions. Application deadline is June 4, 2020.

Science communication during a pandemic

The project COVID communication: Fighting a pandemic through translating science (COVCOM) will develop efficient and evidence-based video communication to communicate complicated health information related to infectious diseases and pandemics, both for the general public and for decision makers. The project will first establish what scientific key concepts need to be communicated in a pandemic.

Different modes of communication for these concepts will be explored and translated to video. The effect of these communication modes will then be tested in controlled experiments, coupling communication to learning outcome and attitude(s) and compliance towards the topic(s). The project’s hypothesis is that short, props-driven narrative videos will outperform longer text and information driven videos both in terms of learning outcome and attitudes.

The positions are open to candidates with a wide range of backgrounds, for instance PhDs in societal safety, health management, medicine, media, communication, innovation, psychology or equivalent.

Fighting pandemics with enhanced risk communication

The project Fighting pandemics with enhanced risk communication: Messages, compliance and vulnerability during the COVID-19 outbreak (PAN-FIGHT) will investigate political and social dimensions of the COVID-19 pandemic, by addressing health risk communication in relation to social and cultural dynamics. The project will lead to new knowledge on how national and local authorities as well as health institutions can enhance their risk communication to mitigate social vulnerabilities. In so doing, the project will contribute to improved preparedness, resilience, and societal safety.

The positions are open to candidates with a wide range of backgrounds, for instance PhDs in societal safety, health management, medicine, psychology, gender studies, social sciences or equivalent.
