European Master in Migration and Intercultural Relations (EMMIR) is the first African-European joint master's programme within the field of migration studies. The degree qualifies graduates for work within areas relating to the urgently relevant topics of migration, diversity and interculturality. At UiS the coordinating function lies within the Department of Education and Sports Studies.
The degree programme was recently selected a "success story" by the European Commission based on its impact, contribution to policy-making, innovative results and creative approach as a source of inspiration for others.
- This is a recognition of the cooperation of the EMMIR consortium over time and its relevance for students and for society as a whole, says Ketil Fred Hansen, academic coordinator for EMMIR at UiS.
The degree includes an internship module in the third semester, offering students a unique opportunity to work on concrete issues in the field at one of the many associated partner organizations under the EMMIR umbrella.
EMMIR is operated by a consortium of universities headed by Carl-von-Ossietzky-Universität in Oldenburg, with key partners in Norway, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, the Sudan, Uganda and South Africa. The degree was established in 2010 under Erasmus Mundus Action 1, now continuing in its second phase under Erasmus+.
