The working group has been tasked by the Minister of Labour and Social Affairs, Anniken Hauglie, to carry out a full review of health, safety and environment on the continental shelf, and to propose measures for improvement.
The minister has ordered this thorough review due to several serious incidents on the Norwegian continental shelf in recent times, as well as disagreements on whether or not cost reductions are detrimental to safety.
Societal Safety Professor Ole Andreas Engen has previously been in charge of several major research projects concerning risk in the oil sector. He is looking forward to the task at hand.
This work is the first step towards a new White Paper on safety on the continental shelf, which is to be presented by the government in 2018.
The committee will be commencing work in January 2017.
