The Winter School is a part of the UTFORSK program (financed by DIKU formerly SIU) between University of Stavanger and Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas. Prof Dimitrios Pavlou is the project leader at UiS.
Eight students from University of Stavanger, Department of Mechanical and Structural Engineering and Material Science attended the winter school in Svalbard. They were joined by 7 students from the Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas who were enrolled in the joint double degree master’s program on “Offshore Field Development Technology”. The winter school was also open to the students in UNIS where Arne Aalbord, Head of the Arctic Technology Department, Nataly Marchenko a research associate, and students participated.
Professors from both UiS and Gubkin University participated with lectures within the field of offshore engineering in the Arctic. From UiS, Prof. Dimitrios Pavlou, Prof. Tor Hemmingsen, Prof. Emeritus Ove Tobias Gudmestad, Prof. Hirpa Lemu, and Prof. Emeritus Arnfinn Nergaard gave lectures. From Gubkin, the lecturers were Prof. Anatoly Zolotukhin, Prof. Alexander Ermakov, Prof. Elena Fedorova, Dr. Maria Khaydina, and Ms. Vlada Streletskaya.
The program focused on the subject – “Technology for efficient and safe Arctic development”. The winter school, which earned the students 5 study credits, was said to be “unforgettable and enriching in new knowledge”.
The winter school in Svalbard was made a success by the good cooperation between the University of Stavanger and Gubkin University. The feedback of the students was very positive: “…The week in Svalbard was full of new knowledge, impressive emotions and incredible nature…”. A special thanks to Prof. Anatoly Zolutukhin and Vlada Streletskaya who coordinated the delegates from Russia.
