More than 50 percent of the world's population live in cities, and this figure is rising. In China, 300– 400 million people will migrate to cities over the next 15 years. Energy consumption and CO2 emissions are growing in parallel with the growth of the world's cities. There is now an urgent need for new, better and more integrated solutions to ensure we have good and liveable cities.
The vision for the cities of the future is that they will utilise resources better, be energy-efficient and have smart solutions for homes, buildings and infrastructure. The sustainable cities of the future will require an even better and more holistic approach to urban planning.
Developing a smart city is first and foremost about how information technology can be combined with buildings and infrastructure, and how this works between us as people and overcomes the challenges facing us in society.
