CIAM web - World Congress WCEAM-2018 Awards & CIAM 20th Anniversary

The 13th World Congress on Engineering Asset Management (WCEAM-2018) was delivered professionally to a good standard and with great success. Responses received from delegates, The International Society for Engineering Asset Management (ISEAM), and others involved clearly indicated that the quality of the program was quite high, and that this year’s World Congress gave a unique positive experience in many ways.

Prof. Jayantha P. Liyanage, The Chair of CIAM/UiS and the Chair of WCEAM-2018, underlines that he is very grateful to all those who made commitments and actively involved in various capacities to make WCEAM-2018, a memorable and a successful event for everyone.

According to the Chair of the International Society of Engineering Asset Management (ISEAM), Prof. Joe Amadi-Echendu; ‘

On behalf of ISEAM Board of Directors, fellows and members, I write to thank you for hosting a very successful 13th WCEAM. Everyone that I spoke to was very pleased with the event, and the efforts that you and your team put into making it a wonderful success. Somehow, the rainy, wet and constant grey skies only added to the uniqueness of Stavanger as a great host city.

The WCEAM-2018 & ISEAM Awards night was held on Tuesday the 25th September.

2 Special awards were given by ISEAM;

  • ISEAM Life Time Achievement Award – Prof. Emeritus Ivar Langen, University of Stavanger (for his dedication towards the establishment of Senter for drift og vedlikehold (SDV) in 1998, all commitments in the initial phase of SDV, and his years of continuous professional contributions)

  • ISEAM Outstanding Achievement Award – Prof. Jayantha P. Liyanage, University of Stavanger (for years of contributions and achievements through CIAM and in various other global capacities to the discipline of Asset engineering and management )


WCEAM-2018 also handed out some Best paper awards;

  • In the Category of Asset information and Data management, Gideon Johannes Bonthuys and Petrus Blom, i@Consulting, and Marco Van Dijk, University of Pretoria, South Africa, for the paper “Leveraging Asset Management Data for Energy Recovery and Leakage Reduction”

  • In the Category of Asset information and Data management, Salla Marttonen-Arola and David Baglee, University of Sunderland, United Kingdom, Sini-Kaisu Kinnunen, Lappeenranta University of Technology, Finland, and Maria Holgado, University of Cambridge, United Kingdom, for the paper, “Introducing Lean into Maintenance Data Management: A Decision Making Approach”

  • In the Category of Asset Economics and Investment decisions, Abe Nezamian and Ian Burns, Aurecon, Australia, for the paper, “Intelligent Asset Management Budgeting and Investment Decisions for Then Portfolio of Health Services Assets”

  • In the Category of Asset Economics and Investment decisions, João Vieira and Nuno Almeida, Universidade de Lisboa, Jaime Silva, Cristina Castro, Branca Lima, Águas de Santo André, and Manuela Trindade, Infraestruturas de Portugal, Portugal, for the paper “Using indicators to deal with uncertainty in the Capital renewals planning of an industrial water supply system: Testing the Infrastructure Value Index”

  • In the Category of Asset health, Diagnostics, and Prognostics, Pengyu Zhu and Jayantha Liyanage, University of Stavanger, and Simon Jeeves, MRC Global, Norway, for the paper “Condition and performance monitoring of Emergency shutdown systems: Data visualization and analysis for Decision support”

  • In the Category of Asset health, Diagnostics, and Prognostics, Xiaochuan Li and David Mba, De Montfort University, United Kingdom, for the paper “Adaptive Canonical Variate Analysis for Machine Fault Detection and Identification”

  • In the Category of Asset risk and Safety, Henri Jounila, Arto Reiman, Osmo Kauppila and Tero Savola, University of Oulu, Finland, for the paper “Common HSEQ performance improvement areas among industrial suppliers: A study of audits in a Finnish industrial cluster network”

  • In the Category of Asset risk and Safety, Gabriela Bjørnsen, Rogaland Fire Dept., Ove Njå, University of Stavanger, and Geir Sverre Braut, Stavanger University Hospital, Norway, for the paper “A Tool to Assess Learning Processes based on the Cooperation Principle”


There were 2 other WCEAM-2018 Best Industrial Case Awards;

  • Stefan Bill, REWITEC GmbH, Germany, for the Industrial Case “Life extension upgrades solution for Gears and Bearings in Wind Turbines”

  • Cato Vevatne, KVS Technologies, Norway, for the Industrial Case “How fire fighters use robots to reduce risk and save lives”


WCEAM-2018 was a great opportunity to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of CIAM. The event ended up with a CIAM 20th Anniversary dinner for invited guests and WCEAM-2018 & ISEAM Awards Night held on the 25th September
