Welcome to the pre-conference workshops on Wednesday November 7!

The Workshops will be held at the University of Stavanger, Kjølv Egelands House. The workshops are free, but conference registration is required.

The pre-conference workshops will take place at the University of Stavanger at Kjølv Egelands house from 16.15 -19.00 PM. All the workshops are located at the 3rd floor in the SEROS – Center for Risk Management and Social Safety area.

  • A tutorial in quantifying uncertainty by probability

    Ullrika Sahlin, Lund University, Sweden

    This tutorial will cover methods to quantify uncertainty by probability such as Expert Knowledge Elicitation and Bayesian analysis. We will go through hands on examples on quantifying uncertainty in assessment inputs as well as in assessment output. All examples will be done using code from the open source program R using the participants own laptops. It is possible to just sit in and interact without running the code.  Max number of places 20. Registration is required.

  • Gender perspectives in risk and societal safety

    While women, men, girls and boys may experience risk, safety, resilience and vulnerability in entirely different ways, research within these areas seldom apply gender perspectives. Large funding institutions such as the European Union and national research councils within and across the Nordic and Baltic countries call for gender perspectives in research programmes wherever relevant. But what does a gender perspective imply in a research project? And when does a gender perspective become relevant? In this workshop, we will explore examples of gender perspectives in risk and societal safety and discuss how our understanding and knowledge could improve through the ‘gender lens’.

  • Regulation and Standardization

    Ole Andreas Engen, University of Stavanger, and Jacob Kringen, The Norwegian Directorate for Civil Protection (DSB), Norway

    The main topic of the workshop is the relationship between risk regulation and standardization, and addresses all relevant actors operating in this particular field e.g. governmental authorities such as Directorates and Inspectorates, HSE managers, consultants and others within businesses involved in standardization processes.

    Standards are important in co-ordination and cooperation between people and organizations. Standards are tools for management, organization and control. The use of standards constitutes a relatively new form of regulation and has become an important element of the contemporary "global order". Hence, standardization includes a broad range of phenomena such as paper size (A4 format), working environment and environmental standards, information technology (telecommunications, internet), manufacturing processes, etc.

    The workshop aims to

    • Present empirical studies on how standardization is used for practical regulatory purposes.
    • Discuss how the standardization processes relates to adaptation and evolvement of risk regulating regimes.
    • Encourage a general critical and reflexive discussion of standardization and its consequences for risk regulation on national and international level.

  • Visualising and analysing public perceptions of risk and security using online tools

    Aiste Balžekienė, Kaunas University of Technology, Lithuania

    During this workshop open access, online tools for analyzing and visualizing public risk perception data from comparative international surveys will be used. The available free resources of survey data including variety of questions on risk and security will be explored (e.g. Eurobarometer, European Social Survey, World Values Survey) and online visualization possibilities will be introduced. Participants should register to the workshop, and should bring their own laptops with internet connection. Maximum number of participants – 20.
