The department of social work is an education and research institution in northern Sweden. The department has over 1000 students, 75 staff, including 15 PhD students. At the department we offer a 3, 5 year Social Work program, including bachelor exam, a master program in social work and several courses on bachelor- and master level. We also have a PhD-program. Skills and expertise development for personnel in social work organizations is an important part of the department and is available in various different formats. In addition to the university courses that we have we offer tailor-made commissioned education and other types of cooperation.

The research at the department covers a wide range of methods, topics and perspectives and holds a unique quality of both width and depth. Six research profiles can be identified at the department; Welfare of children, youth and family; Internationalization, migration and diversity; Interventions, Addiction, Evaluation; Ageing and social welfare; Organization, profession and knowledge and Mental health and wellbeing in social and health care settings. The Department of Social work is also host to the Umeå University Centre for Disability Research.
