The course teaches about the chemistry that happens inside organisms, like us. The structure and function of components, their interactions, and the variability of chemical reactions that maintain a cell alive are described. The experimental tools to make the chemistry of life visible are presented and explained.

Learning outcome

The student will know the structure and function of components found in and in interaction with a cell. This includes knowledge about water, aminoacids, proteins including their enzymatic functions, membranes, nucleic acids, and carbohydrates. The student will also know the essential anabolic- and catabolic-, and signal transduction-pathways of a cell. This includes Nucleic acid-, Carbohydrate-, Protein-, and Nitrogen-, Lipid- as well as the photosynthetic and respiratory metabolism. The student will have an understanding about the tools used in biochemistry and how biochemical knowledge is applied in biotechnology.

The lecture teaches about the role of water and buffers in an organism and a cell. The composition, and biosynthesis of proteins including nitrogen metabolism and the structural and functional properties of proteins are presented. The compartmentation of the cell and the special structure and function of membranes especially for cellular metabolism including topics like energy, transport and signal transduction are explained. Photosynthesis and Respiration are covered as well as Glycolysis, Gluconeogenesis, Glycogen, and Citric acid metabolic pathways. The lecture also covers the basic tools used for characterization of the chemical reactions of the cell and biotechnology techniques employed today.
