By completion of the course the student should know the basic principles for treatment methods for potable water and municipal wastewater in addition to design and analysis of mechanical, chemical and biological wastewater treatment unit processes..

Learning outcome

The students should know the basic principles of mechanical, chemical and biological methods for treatment of drinking and different types of wastewater. The student is able to do laboratory analyses of the most common parameters associated with wastewater treatment (SS, BOD, N, P, color, total and coliform bacteria) and perform simple laboratory tests for characterization and treatment evaluation of different wastewater methods. Furthermore, students will be able to design and dimension wastewater treatment unit processes based on mass- and energy balances, including steady state modelling.

Contents

Fundamental and advanced knowledge of mechanisms for biological, chemical and mechanical methods for treatment of potable water and municipal wastewater is covered. Through lectures, coursework and laboratory practices the students are given a basis for design calculations and operational principles of primary, secondary, tertiary and advanced tertiary treatment processes based on continuity principles.

MLJ530 Environmental Process Analysis
MLJ530 or similar course, and basic chemistry as required for admission to MSc Environmental Engineering

Course teacher sets final mark: Written mid-term exam counts 25% and written final exam counts 40%. Laboratory exercises count 35%. Both laboratory reports, written mid-term exam and written final exam must be passed to have a final grade.
If the laboratory exercises or mid term is evaluated to a non-passing grade, the student can re-sit these the next semester the course is taught. Retake exam (final exam only) follow the faculty's ordinary schedule.

Coursework requirements

Completion of mandatory lab assignments are to be made at the times and in the groups that are assigned and published on Canvas. Absence due to illness or for other reasons must be communicated to the laboratory personnel as soon as possible. One cannot expect that provisions for completion of the lab assignments at other times can be made, unless prior arrangements with the laboratory personnel have been agreed.
Failure to complete the assigned labs on time or not having them approved will result in barring from taking the final course exam.
