Data handling in everyday student life

As a student, you are an important part of the work with information security at UiS.

Here are some simple rules for good habits in the digital world during your studies:

  • Use strong passwords (16+ characters, with numbers and/or symbols).
  • Do not share users and logins with others.
  • Lock your screen EVERY time you leave your computer.
  • Use your UiS OneDrive account for storage rather than local storage.
  • If you have access to secure areas (e.g. lab) with your access card, you are also responsible for ensuring that unidentified persons do not accompany you inside.
  • If you share information with others, it is important that they also follow the storage guide.
  • Have an active and up-to-date antivirus and firewall.
  • It is recommended to have a fully encrypted local disk, see guidance here for WIN and MAC.

Students at UiS are responsible for familiarizing themselves with and complying with the rules and guidelines that apply at all times for information security, including the ICT regulations and regulations for information security and data privacy.

Your responsibility for datastorage

The most important thing is that you store, process and share files and data in a secure way. It is the content of the data that determines where the information can be stored.

You do this in three steps:

1. Find out what types of information, files and data you will store and process.

2. Find out what classification applies to your information.

3. Check the storage guide for suitable tools for handling your data.

Remember that secure storage and handling of your data helps to ensure that unwanted actors do not gain access to, or can manipulate, your data. It can also help to ensure the availability of your data so that you do not lose it if your machine is destroyed or stolen.
