2026 Summer Intern - CO2 Transport Research and Technology

About the position
TotalEnergies, one of the largest energy producers in the world, has a transverse CCUS R&T program distributed across three different countries. Within this strategic program, “CO2 transport” has a high priority in the development of a large-scale CCS full chain industry.
Engaged in CCS for more than 3 decades, Norway is strongly promoting the development and deployment of the CCUS technology. Over the past 20 years, more than 2 000 M€ of public funding has been invested in this field. In this dynamic context, TotalEnergies is heavily engaged in developing CCUS activities in Norway from both R&D and industrial project perspectives.
Two main CO2 transport options looked at within the CO2 Transport team are pipeline and ship transport and there are various activities related to both. For ship transport, several architectures can be considered regarding offloading and injection of the CO2. For example, CO2 can be offloaded to a temporary storage or an FSIU before it is transported further and injected subsea. Direct offshore offloading is another option in which CO2 will be injected into the reservoir directly from the ship.
Activities:
The main objective of the summer job is to assist the CO2 Transport Research and Technology (R&T) team to study the technologies for offshore offloading of CO2 transported via ships. At a minimum, the following activities will be required from the job holder:
- Perform a literature review focusing on the offshore offloading technologies already developed or under development.
- Review the advantages and disadvantages of different technologies in relation to CO2 offshore offloading.
- Document the status of different offshore offloading technologies and identify the gaps to fulfill for the technologies to be qualified and the desired improvements.
Prepare a report summarizing the conclusions from the study.
