In this course, the student will work practically and analytically with basic musical elements such as

form, rhythm and dynamics, as well as practical training in the use of relevant music terminology in their own work as a dancer and in dialogue with music professionals. The student will also work both practically and theoretically with different music forms, genres and styles. The course gives the student basic knowledge about the function of music in performance work and practice in using this knowledge in their own work and in collaboration with others.

Content

Students will gain a basic knowledge of music and music terminology, and an overview of music history, as well as practical training in the use of music terminology that is necessary to master for a dance artist. The course will include basic practical exercises in rhythm and ear training.

The students will gain a basic knowledge of the function of music in scenic work and be able to use this practically and analytically in their own work and in collaboration with others. By analysing performances, reflecting in plenary sessions and participating in workshops with performing musicians and/or composers, students will gain knowledge about the relationship between music and dance.

Knowledge

By the end of the course, the student will be able to:

  • use relevant music terminology and apply this in their own work as a dance artist and in dialogue with music professionals.
  • use practical musical elements in their work as a dance artist.
  • discuss different musical forms, genres and styles and use this in analysis of dance performances.

Bestått fysisk og danseteknisk opptaksprøve.

Coursework requirements

Attendance in all organized teaching is mandatory in accordance with the UK Faculty’s attendance regulations.

Portfolio - 3 assignments (practical and written)

Written assignments in the subject can be submitted in Norwegian or English. Swedish and Danish is also accepted.

Method of work

Practical exercises. Lectures. Discussion and group work. Listening and musical analysis.

The subject is organized as weekly teaching. However, the teaching activity can entirely or partly be organized as intensive modules in periods of the academic year. The subject can also have a combination of weekly teaching and intensive modules.

Course assessment

The faculty decides whether early dialogue should be conducted in all or selected groups of courses offered by the faculty. The purpose is to gather feedback from students for making changes and adjustments to the course during the current semester.
