Master thesis (MRRMAS)

The master's thesis is the final independent work of the master's degree in accounting and auditing. This craft is written together with a fellow student, and should be written within a topic that the students think has been particularly interesting during the course of study. The process is supervised by academic researchers who have experience in designing and carrying out scientific studies.

Content

The master's thesis is a carefully designed scientific document that presents an issue and arguments, and which is documented, based on primary and/or secondary sources. The thesis must have a significant research component, and must be written with the help of an academic supervisor. The assignment gives the student an opportunity to demonstrate competence in accounting, auditing, law or finance.

In preparation for the master's thesis, students must participate in seminars. The content of these seminars may vary from year to year, and may include topics such as philosophy of science, the research process, formulation of problems, research ethical issues, literature searches and writing advice for the master's thesis.

After completing this course, the student is expected to have knowledge of

  • How to define and present a research question
  • How to develop a theory
  • Which theories and methods can be used to solve the chosen research question
  • How relevant data may be generated or collected
  • How data can be analyzed
  • How the results from the analyzes are to be interpreted
  • How the research study should be presented in an appropriate way

Skills

After completing this course, students are expected to be able to:

  • Formulate a relevant research question that can be answered theoretically or empirically
  • Search for relevant sources for theories and data that can solve the chosen research question
  • Critically review existing theories and empirical evidence
  • Choose a method that is suitable for answering the research question
  • Create a design within the chosen method
  • Generate or collect necessary data
  • Organise, analyze and summarize data
  • Use the results from the analysis to discuss the research question
  • Present the research results from the study that has been completed

Required prerequisite knowledge

Completed 60 credits from the master's program in accounting and auditing. A minimum of one course in quantitative or qualitative methods at master's degree level.

The master's thesis must be written together with a fellow student. If strong reasons exists, a student can apply to the study program director about writing the thesis alone. Strong reasons can be, for example, that one is planning to use confidential data for the master's thesis, or that there are medical reasons.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course coordinator, the student representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years.
