Point of Care Technology (POCT) MPH150

Upon completion of this course the student will have knowledge and competence in prehospital point-of-care technology, including ultrasonography, biomarkers for life threatening conditions and advanced neuro-diagnostics.

Learning outcome

A candidate who has completed this course should have the following learning outcomes defined in terms of knowledge, skills and general competence:


The candidate 

  • Has thorough knowledge of, and will be able to analyse the basic theory, application and limitations of focused ultrasound assessment, as well as application of ultrasound for peripheral vascular access
  • Has thorough knowledge of, and can analyse the application and limitations of selected general biomarkers in the prehospital environment


The candidate 

  • Can analyse and critically appraise, as well as demonstrate basic skills in applying ultrasound in focused assessments and in vascular access in experimental models
  • Can analyse and critically appraise the correct application of point-of-care blood tests

General Competence

The candidate 

  • Can recognize and communicate the criterias for the usefulness of a point-of-care diagnostic test in general
  • Can analyse and discuss the benefits and limitations for a point-of-care diagnostic test in various clinical situations
  • Can identify, consider and communicate the aspects of overconsumption of diagnostic tests
  • Can analyse and discuss the cost vs. benefit aspects of diagnostic tests within the health care system
  • Can describe and apply the basic statistics used to determine the presence or absence of disease
  • Ultrasound physics
  • Application and limitations of point-of-care ultrasound (PoCUS)
  • Introduction to lung, abdominal, heart and trauma PoCUS protocols
  • Introduction to vascular ultrasound including guiding of vascular access and diagnosis of deep vein thrombosis 
  • Hands-on practical ultrasound training in small groups
  • Biomarkers and point-of-care blood analysis
  • Application and limitations of prehospital blood tests
  • Application and limitations of prehospital neuro-diagnostic
  • Statistical models to evaluate the effectiveness of diagnostic tests 
Required prerequisite knowledge
Eksamen / vurdering

Written exam (multiple choice)

At the end of the course the students will have a multiple-choice exam. Candidates must answer 2/3 of the questions correctly in order to pass the exam.

Coursework requirements
Obligatorisk flervalgsprøve, 80% class attendance, 100% attendance at the ultrasound module

1: 80% class attendance.

If more than 50% attendance is achieved the student may apply for individual evaluation. The student may, if the faculty finds the basis sufficient, be given an extended written assignment. 

2: 100 % attendance at the practical ultrasound training module. If the student does not participate in the practical ultrasound training, a certificate of an equivalent ultrasound course may be accepted.
