Bio

Marja Ylönen – Associate Professor in Risk Management and Societal Safety, Department of Safety, Economics and Planning, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Stavanger, Norway.

My research interests include safety, security, risks (risk governance) and resilience at the organizational, inter-organizational and societal levels. I hope to add new insights to the risk and safety fields by complementing safety, security and risk related theories and frameworks with sociological theories and perspectives.

In my earlier job at the Technical Research Centre of Finland, I worked with safety-critical organizations, and with safety authorities in the nuclear and chemical industries. I have conducted several safety culture evaluations in the nuclear industry context. One of my recent research projects covered integrated management of safety and security in Seveso sites. That study was motivated by the increasing digitalisation trend and the use of AI tools in the high-risk industries. I am interested in studying digitalisation development and its implications on management, for instance, in the Customs and border control context, as my job is linked to the new and unique bachelor programme on Customs and Border Control.

I am involved in several scientific associations, for example, I’m council member of the SRA (Society for Risk Analysis), and board member of the SRA-Europe. I am also co-chairing the Technical committee of ESRA (European Safety and Reliability Association) on organizational factors and safety culture.  International collaboration is one of my favourite activities and working with scientific associations gives a good overview of what happens in the research world.
