Practical studies (BBAP20)

Professional training will be supervised, varied and assessed, and form an integral part of the programme. Students will further develop their professional identity and understanding of the relationship between theory and practice. Supervised professional training will provide increased expertise that is relevant to the child welfare educator’s field of work. In this work, ethically assessed actions play a key role.

Content

Supervised professional training is initially offered in Rogaland, and is organised by UiS. The university allocates a place of supervised professional training to each individual student. The practical courses runs over 22 weeks, 4 semesters.

The course consists of 6 topics:

1. Independent practice of child welfare work under supervised professional training

2. Relationships and communication

3. Professional role and ethics

4. Participation

5. Interprofessional collaboration

6. Applying research-based knowledge

Learning outcome

After successfully completing and passing the course, candidates will have achieved the following learning outcomes defined in the following topics/areas of expertise:

Independent practice of child welfare work under supervised professional training

  • Can apply relevant legislation, regulations and guidelines to assess and safeguard the best interests of children and the rights of children and families.
  • Can apply a multidisciplinary platform of knowledge in order to work systematically and purposefully with children, young people and families.
  • Can apply academic knowledge, methods, theories and professional discretion to guide children, young people, their parents and guardians in learning, coping and change processes, for the benefit of children and families.
  • Can obtain and apply knowledge from children, young people and/or parents in the work with measures and evaluation of measures in child welfare professional work.
  • Can plan, implement, document, evaluate and communicate measures and service design, orally and in writing, based on the best interests of the child.

Relationships and communication

  • Can use activities to promote play, learning, inclusion, mastery and participation.
  • Can update their knowledge about children’s everyday digital life.
  • Can apply academic knowledge to communicate and collaborate appropriately with children, young people and parents/guardians, and can talk to children about topics such as neglect.
  • Can apply academic knowledge about cultural diversity and demonstrate multicultural understanding and cultural sensitivity in the provision of services.

Professional role and ethics

  • Can use knowledge and experience to investigate, facilitate, implement, document, analyse, assess and evaluate child welfare work in an ethical and professionally sound manner.
  • Can reflect on power relations, professionalism and one’s own role as a professional in encounters with children and families.
  • Has knowledge about supervision and is able to use experiences and professional knowledge, reflect critically on their own and the service’s practice, and adjust practice under supervision.
  • Has insight into their own preconceptions, attitudes and values, and the importance of relational skills in child welfare work, and can manage ethical issues within the subject area.
  • Can use knowledge, skills and experiences to meet children, young people and families in a vulnerable life situation with understanding, empathy and recognition.
  • Has digital experiences and knowledge of digital security, and can assist in the development and use of suitable technology at both indvidual and system level within the field of child protection.

Participation

  • Can use experience and knowledge to build relationships, collaborate and communicate in a way that promotes inclusion and participation and contribution.

Interprofessional collaboration

  • Has broad knowledge of and can apply academic knowledge and expertise to exercise interdisciplinary, interagency and interprofessional collaboration.

Applying research-based knowledge

  • Can apply research knowledge, experiential knowledge and knowledge from children, young people and parents as a basis for knowledge-based practice in encounters with children, young people and families in their own services, and make referrals if necessary.
  • Can apply research, practice and experience-based knowledge in order to investigate children and young people’s care situation and behaviour, and facilitate appropriate measures.

An overall assessment is made of the entire supervised professional training period. There is a maximum of 10 sick leave days.Definitions of passed/failed supervised professional training are stated in the Internal Regulations for Supervised Professional Training at the Department of Social Studies. Consequences of not passing supervised professional training: If students fail supervised professional training, they must retake the course together with the subsequent year group. All compulsory activities must be retaken. If supervised professional training is not passed, students only have one new opportunity to take and pass the course, cf. Regulations relating to Studies and Examinations at the University of Stavanger.Right of appeal: Students may only lodge appeals against formal errors. Reference is made to the Regulations relating to Studies and Examinations at the University of Stavanger.Suitability assessment requirements cf. Coursework requirements

Clarification of learning outcomes, both supervised professional training assignments, participation in the compulsory seminars and the practical training must be approved before final assessment of the supervised professional training course. Approval/non-approval of compulsory activities is announced on Studentweb.

Clarification of plan for learning: At the start of supervised professional training, students must clarify their individual learning outcomes in collaboration with the supervisor and send them to the contact teacher at UiS.

Supervised professional training assignment 1: Scope of 2000 words (+/- 10%), excluding table of contents and bibliography. Referencing style: APA 7th.

Supervised professional training assignment 2: Scope of 3000 words (+/- 10%), excluding table of contents and bibliography. Referencing style: APA 7th. The supervised professional training assignments are to be submitted in Inspera. Late submission is considered failure to submit an assignment and will therefore be assessed as not approved.

If it is necessary to postpone submission, this must be agreed with the contact teacher. Reference is also made to the Internal Regulations for Supervised Professional Training, Department of Social Studies.

Compulsory attendance at pre-training and post-training seminars: There is a 75% attendance at the practice seminars.
