About me
Rune Todnem By, Ph.D. is Professor of Leadership, chairholder of the UNESCO Chair on Leadership, Innovation and Anticipation, and head of programme MTN Master i Transformasjon og Nyskaping (Lifelong learning programme; MTI Master's in Transformation and Innovation) - Norway's first and only leadership development programme based on design thinking principles - at the Department of Leadership and Service Innovation, University of Stavanger. He is also the longest serving editor-in-chief of Journal of Change Management: Reframing Leadership and Organizational Practice (2008-2024), and co-editor on books focusing on leadership and organisational change. Following 15 years in British academia, Rune returned to Norway in 2019 to continue his scholar-practitioner work on leadership and organisational change with a particular focus on contributing to reframing theory and practice to better address 21st century challenges.
Rune has coined (1) the EPICally MAD leadership framework (see TEDx), (2) the PAC leadership ontology* (focusing on the production of Purpose, Alignment and Commitment), and (3) the Telos Leadership Lens (TLL)* suggesting that
1) Leadership is a responsibility of the many, not a privilege of the few
2) Leadership is the collective pursuit of delivering on purpose
3) Leadership purpose is to be guided by internal goods (what is best for most).
*See the article Leadership: In Pursuit of Purpose (2021) for more information.
