Supplementary Training and Injury Prevention for Dancers (BDA825)

  1. The course consists of a dancer’s athletic theory with main focus on basic principles of training and supplements within theory and method of training in regard to individually made training programs.

The students will work theoretically and practically by planning, executing and evaluating their own basic training programs. This will be done on basis of athletic theory, method and basic training, as well as individual perquisites and needs that take your own individual goals as dance performance artists into account.

In regard to supplementing methods of training, the main focus will lie on cardio, physical strength, resilience, coordination, movability and mental training. Students will learn how to make individual training programs dance-specific, and how to base each program on individual needs and how to implement basic principles of athletic training, such as customization of workload, specificity, progression, variation, individual and holistic stimuli, control and steering.

The course will give the students knowledge of basic physiological processes within the human body when it is in training, as well as basic knowledge of nutrition, prevention of damage and evolution of movement in dance.

Content

The physiological processes of the human body and how this affects both training and restitution. Nutrition and diet. Methods of training and basic principles of athletic training. Methods of training and supplementing methods of training to be able to evaluate individual needs and be able to plan, execute and evaluate a supplementing dance-specific training program. Injury prevention.

Learning outcome

The course will give students knowledge of:

  • basic physiological processes within the human body when training and in restitution.
  • Nutrition and diet.
  • methods of training, especially cardio, physical strength, resilience, coordination, movability and mental training.
  • Basic principles of athletic training, such as customization of workload, specificity, progression, variation, individual and holistic stimuli, control and steering.
  • Methods of training and supplementing methods of training to be able to evaluate individual needs and be able to plan, execute and evaluate a supplementing dance-specific training program.
  • The most usual damages done in dancing, as well as first aid and injury prevention.
  • Evolution of movement.

The course will teach students to:

  • Explain basic physiological processes within the human body when training and during restitution.
  • Make nutrition-plans that are individually customized.
  • Make and execute sequences of basic training for dancers based on central principles of alethic training such as congestion, customization, restitution, specificity, progression, variation, specific and holistic stimuli, steering and control.
  • Use methods of athletic training specifically when planning, executing and evaluating their own training supplements, and by that acknowledging their individual capacity, avoid damage and reach their goals as dance artists.

Basic Comprehension

  • Thorough knowledge of the physiological processes of the human body and how this affects both training and restitution.

    • Execute understanding about methods of training regarding cardio, physical strength, resilience, coordination, movability and mental training.
  • Execute understanding of supplemented training for dance-performance. Each

student must know the plasticity as well as the prerequisites of the human body and the ability of restitution after damage.

  • Use methods of athletic training specifically when planning, executing and evaluating their own training, and by that acknowledging and working on their individual capacity, avoid damage and reach their goals as dance artists.
