This course provides an introductory overview of major building materials used in the construction industry. The course will also give an introduction to the typical manufacturing and processing, structure, properties, and maintenance requirements of each material.

Content
Materials that are included as load-bearing parts of structures in building and construction.
Relevant materials are: concrete, steel, aluminum, timber, brick, stone, asphalt.
Particularly for concrete, considerations are given to proportioning, ingredients, production, conditions during hardening, and properties of the finished concrete.
Learning outcome
After completing the course, the students shall understand the raw materials and the production process of materials to be used in the construction of engineering structures. Be able to select the proper material to be used in the construction and test the material according to relevant design standards.

Coursework requirements
All compulsory lab assignments (in total 4) must be approved in order to take the exam. Lab assignments have compulsory attendance and written reports must be approved.
