Urban redevelopment operations are complex endeavours undertaken by multidisciplinary teams through lengthy processes. The course focuses on the physical aspects (the urban design component), dealing with changes in the public space structure and in the built stock to replace or complement former functions. The course prepares the student to deal with such issues both as part of a municipal planning office or as part of a private consulting firm

Content
Planning in developed areas/existing environments is a complex and multidisciplinary task. The course deals with planning and renewal of areas in existing cities and towns. The course studies the aesthetic, technical and functional aspects of planning, programming and implementing of projects in the public or private sector.
Learning outcome
The goal is to create a basic understanding of place-making in urban areas in terms of:

To gain abilities in design thinking in urban design

Land use integration between different zones are formally expressed in plans and projects regarding the interaction of multiple elements (Traffic, streets, green structure, parks, construction, housing, recreation, and commercial areas)

Obtaining relevant data, background information and analyzes to support the identification of opportunities and challenges.

Design of proposals for different stages of urban development. Conceptual studies, basic ideas, development and zoning plans, as well as guidelines and design catalogues.

To develop knowledge and critical thinking about urban design and planning, a conscious attitude about the purpose of planning decisions.

Submission in groups.No re-exam is offered on the report. Students who do not pass the report can take this part again the next time the subject has regular teaching.
Coursework requirements
The submission to the course consists of the design of a large-scale urban design project, developed through four stages. Each stage is presented to the entire class in four workshops. Each workshop entails a partial report, the basis for the final report. Participation in at least three of the four workshops is mandatory.The final grade is based on a written report documenting the process and presenting the final proposals. The report is a digital booklet in which sketches, maps, plans, sections, perspectives, and other digital instruments are used to illustrate the processes and the final proposals. Students who fail all or part of the course or want to improve their grades must retake it.Compulsory attendance at lectures and studio work. The student will not get an evaluation with less than 80 % attendance.
