Risk and vulnerability analysis (BYS120)

The course introduces students to the fundamental concepts, principles, and methods in risk science and risk and vulnerability analysis. Furthermore, the course focuses on the application of risk and vulnerability analyses in the context of urban development and spatial planning. The course will also provide an introduction to impact assessments and the legal framework regulating their use.

Through the course, students are introduced 1) Fundamental concepts, principles, and methods within risk and vulnerability analysis and risk science, including risk identification, risk assessment, risk characterization, and risk management. 2) Risk and vulnerability analyses and how to conduct such analyses in connection with interventions in an urban context. 3) Impact assessments, what they are, their legal foundations, and their connection to risk and risk analysis.

Learning outcome

Knowledge:

Upon completing the course, students are expected to have knowledge of:

  • Fundamental concepts, principles, and methods within risk and vulnerability analysis and risk science.
  • Risk and vulnerability analyses related to interventions in an urban context.
  • What impact assessments are and the legal framework that regulates their use in spatial planning.

Skills:

Upon completing the course, students are expected to be able to:

  • Identify and apply fundamental concepts, principles, and methods in a risk analysis context.
  • Conduct basic risk and vulnerability analyses and propose risk-reducing measures.
  • Use public guidelines, databases, and tools to find relevant information for inclusion in risk and vulnerability analyses.

General competence:

  • Understand and analyze factors that influence risk and societal safety in urban areas.
  • Understand and discuss some key challenges and dilemmas in the government's organization and oversight of societal safety and various risk-related issues in spatial planning.
