Bachelor Thesis in English (ENG290)

The student will write a thesis in one of two sub-disciplines of English: (applied) linguistics or literature. The choice of sub-discipline in this course must coincide with the chosen direction in ENG270 (ENG271 Specialization in English Literature; or ENG272 Specialization in English Language - International English: variation and change).

Content

The students will write a thesis in one of two sub-disciplines of English: (applied) linguistics or literature. The student chooses topic, research material and relevant reading in consultation with a supervisor. The student must submit a thesis proposal containing a title and research questions, as well as drafts of the thesis, within given deadlines.

Upon completion of the course, the student will be able to

  • formulate research questions for thesis writing

  • show familiarity with and correct use of research ethics, appropriate academic terminology and references

Required prerequisite knowledge

Students must have a minimum of 45 ECTS in introductory English courses or equivalent in order to begin the specialization.

The thesis is an independent scholarly research paper of 5500 words +/- 10 %, not including appendices, tables and references.

Coursework requirements

Oppgaveseminar 75% obligatorisk oppmøte, Godkjent tittel og problemstilling levert innenfor oppgitte frister, Minimum to godkjente utkast til oppgave levert innenfor oppgitte frister, Minimum to veiledningsmøter
Seminar attendance 75 %. Approved topic and research question(s) and minimum two approved thesis drafts within given deadlines. Students must attend at least two supervision sessions. Students are not entitled to further supervision in connection with a new exam attempt / new admission.

Open to all students accepted into the Bachelor programme in English Language and Literature at the Department of Cultural Studies and Languages, provided that they have the prerequisite knowledge. Open to exchange students. Other students must apply within the given deadlines.

Course assessment

There must be an early dialogue between the course coordinator, the student representative and the students. The purpose is feedback from the students for changes and adjustments in the course for the current semester.In addition, a digital course evaluation must be carried out at least every three years. Its purpose is to gather the students experiences with the course.
